I studied Fine Art and Sculpture at St. Martin's School of Art and Hull College of Art in the '70s. The latter fact no doubt played a major part in Hull being made European City of Culture in 2017. My sculpture interests then got buried in my career as a photographer. I have now picked it up again.

My sculpture work falls into two categories - the making of actual three dimensional pieces, and the production of photographic sketches based in, on or around these works. The former is quite straightforward. I take stocks of raw material - usually scrap steel - and manipulate them until a coherent and meaningful abstract form emerges, then weld them all together. There is some manipulation afterwards - grinding, painting or polishing as seems appropriate. The photographic work entails investigating, making notes, sketches and patterns with the camera. The resulting images stand in their own right, but often are closely related to a particular 3D sculpture. The two practices can benefit greatly from being seen side by side.

Below are two galleries - one for sculpture and one for photographic sketches. To view the images, click on any one of them, then scroll...

I made the carved brick piece at junior school - I must have been looking at Hepworth or Moore!
